UpDecember 2007 South America:   Falkland Islands PrevNextSlideshow

The Reclus Hut was originally built in Stanley and used as a small refuge.   In December 1956, it was shipped to Antarctica and installed on the Reclus Peninsula on the Danco Coast, a point on the northwest coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.   It served as a refuge for the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) team as they searched for a gateway from the west coast to the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. FIDS is now the British Antarctic Survey but the connection to the Falklands continues as the British use the islands as a gateway to Antarctica for both ships and aircraft.

The Reclus Hut was dismantled in early 1996 and rebuilt on the Stanley Museum grounds in late 1998.   It contains many of the original contents, some of which can be seen by peeking through one of the three windows.
