| Tuesday, December 25, 2007 --- Christmas Day
Puerto Madryn would be our first penguin sighting. Well, it would be the first time we'd seen penguins in the wild. It promised to be a long day. We chose the "Penguins of Punta Tombo" as our excursion for the day. Punta Tombo is 171km (about 107 miles) south from Puerto Madryn, thus it was expected to take approximately 2½ hours each way. We made a rest stop on the way down, good thing as the last part of the road was gravel and not always smooth! We spent about an hour and a half wandering (on a predefined path) amongst the penguins. Occasionally, a park ranger would hold back the visitors to allow penguins to cross the path. On the trip back, we were served box lunches. Sandwich, salad, little cakes and water. Since we'd been eating so much on the ship, it was nice to not feel compelled to eat everything in site! Yes, it was a whole lot of driving / riding but well worth the trek!
