First stop was Plaza de Independencia (Independence Plaza) in the center of which is the statue of General José Artigas. Considered to be the country's liberator, he is to Uruguay as San Martín is to Argentina.

Artigas' remains are buried in a crypt under the statue. The crypt, guarded by 2 guards 24 hours per day is accessible by stairs down on either side of the statue. Time did not allow for a visit there.
