April 2007 Rhine River Cruise:  Arnhem, Netherlands

Friday, April 20, 2007

We're now out of Germany and into the Netherlands.     We docked a little before 9am in Arnhem.  The included tour was out to the Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn, Gelderland, the summer residence of the Royal House of Orange from 1686 to 1975.   In 1975, by will of Queen Wilhemina, the palace was turned over to the state and subsequently into a museum.

We learned that although "The Netherlands" and "Holland" are often used interchangeably, "Holland" (there is a North Holland and a South Holland), is technically a subset of the Netherlands!

Photography was not allowed inside the Heit Loo palace, thus all photos are of the building and the surrounding grounds and formal gardens.

We were back to the boat for lunch and then chose, for the afternoon, to take an optional Battle of Arnheim, "Operation Market Garden" tour.   This took us first to the Airbourne Museum, a driving tour through the former battlefields (now the epitomy of pastoral scenes), and a cemetery where many troops are buried.
