| Dionysus Mosaic: Dates back to the early 3rd century AD. The highlight of the Römisch-Germanisches (Roman-Germanic) Museum was discovered in 1941 when excavating for an air-raid shelter. Over a million pieces of ceramic, glass and limestone make up this elaborately decorated and colored mosaic. It was once the floor of a banquet hall in a large Roman villa. Depicted are a drunken Dionysus (Greek God of wine) who is surrounded by Cupid, Pan, dancers, satyrs and delights of a banquet table. This picture shows about half the floor. |
